All about the course
Encompassing planning and pre-design, design, construction, operation and re-construction; this brings together the built environment in a collaborative and imaginative way. The course promotes an action learning approach, with a focus on the workplace and current practice-based developments.
In year one, you will develop a basic understanding of architectural spatiality and the relationship between form/space/material/tectonics. Studio-based modules will be complemented by lecture and seminar based modules which will challenge you to think creatively and form your own ideas.
During year two you will consider the performance of buildings from different perspectives and learn how to design according to performance criteria, linking this with conceptual frameworks. As the year progresses, the focus of design moves to a more urban scale, history and theory. There is also an optional overseas study visit.
In your final year you will combine and apply all the theoretical, technical and creative skills you have developed throughout the course in an architectural design project. Final year modules will also prepare you for the second stage of your architecture education.
You will be introduced to architectural design thinking through the understanding of the inter-relationships between people and their immediate environment in place making.
Design Representation and Modelling
You will be introduced to the concept and techniques of drawing, modelling and alternative forms of representations of architectural design. The module will develop your ability to interpret and produce 2-D and 3-D architectural representations (e.g. plans, sections, elevations, axonometric and perspective projections) and models (e.g. analogue, physical and digital).
History and Theory of Architecture 1
You will be introduced to the canon of western architectural history and its underlying ideological assumptions. It locates the major practices and sites of western architecture in a wide visual and cultural context and critically examines its relevance to the practicing architect today.
Design Studio 1B
You will develop your architectural thinking and appreciate the implications of the inter-relationships between people, the environment and place making through the development of a building design of a low to medium level of complexity.
Introduction to Building Services and Systems
You will learn about the environmental factors which influence decision making with regard to Building Services and Systems. You will develop an understanding of thermal and environmental comfort systems which address ecological challenges. You will gain awareness of the impact of heat transfer, illumination and acoustics on buildings and their users. You will be able to demonstrate how building typology informs building systems and performance of building envelopes.
Principles of Architectural Structure
This module aims at providing a fundamental understanding of the design principles and behaviours of structural forms, elements and systems in buildings. You will be introduced to nature as a generator of structure. You'll explore the relationship between shape, material, structural performance, loads, assembly methods and construction technology through modelling, analysis, and case studies. You will be able to understand the mutual dependencies between architectural design, structural performance and manufacturing technologies in the past and present through the knowledge of historical and contemporary structural forms and materials. The module also enables you to investigate the implications of nature, people and technology in the design of architectural structures.
Design Studio 2
This module will further develop your understanding of, and ability to apply, the principles of architectural design, with specific reference to the re-use and redevelopment of existing buildings.
Construction Technology in Architecture
This module will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to explain building construction techniques and materials used. You will also develop an understanding of various contemporary and historic construction techniques related to both project delivery and environmental considerations.
Performance Modelling and Integrated Design
You will gain the skills and ability to deploy digital technologies such BIM in the development of design alternatives for a client brief and justify design selection with the accurate adoption of the digital technologies.
Principles of Sustainable Built Environments
You will develop a comprehensive recognition and understanding of global and local principles of sustainability in the built environment. You will also develop knowledge and understanding of the relationship between sustainable design and construction processes and their social, environmental and economic impact. This module will also provide you with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to engage in the design, procurement, and construction of sustainable built environment.
History and Theory of Architecture 2
You will gain a broad understanding of the history and theory of architecture focused on the examination of the histories of modern architecture.
This project will provide you with an opportunity to work in multi-disciplinary teams and to enable them to perform in a role/discipline in the context of a team based project. It will promote reflection on individual and team working and the multi-disciplinary nature of built environment projects. You will practice and further develop both discipline based and generic key skills required by a built environment professional. It encourages self-reflection and enable you to further your personal development plan, that aligns the learning needs and career aspirations and the requirements of the business sector and the professional institutions. You will also further develop written/oral communication, team working and inter-personal skills.
Design Studio 3
You will develop, apply and test the student’s architectural design skills in the context of a complex design project. You will apply the necessary skills, competencies and understanding of a selected range of theoretical, technical, cultural, historical and professional issues, and the ability to integrate them into their designs. You will expand your design methods to include (fine) art practices, in particular those which focus on the development of spatial interventions.
Re-creating the City - Re-use and Regeneration
You will explore the theme of regeneration and application of architecture practice in the regeneration of cities and urban environments.
Design Studio 4
You will apply and test your architectural design skills in the context of a complex design project. You will develop the skills, competencies and understanding of a selected range of theoretical, technical, cultural, historical and professional issues, and the ability to integrate them into their designs.
Practice Management and Law
This module aims to prepare you for your first year in industry by equipping you with a comprehensive understanding of the profession of architecture. You will develop an understanding of the role of the architect in society. You will learn about the management of the construction industry, the role of the architectural practice and responsibilities of each within the regulatory legal context within which architecture operates
Ideas and Issues in Interior Architecture
The aim of this module is for you to develop your design thinking and appreciate the implications of the inter-relationships between people, the environment and place making through the development of an interior design intervention of a low to medium level of complexity.
Design Research Project
You will learn to write and deliver an extended and coherent study on a design related topic. On completion, you will demonstrate competency in research skills in support of future learning development. This module will help you to develop the skills of reflective practice through engagement with contemporary architecture and urbanism.
Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.
What will I be doing?
You will be taught in purpose built design studios located in our New Adelphi building. You will develop your knowledge and skills through a blend of theoretical, collaborative and practical methods:
- Studio projects
- Projects with other students
- Directed study
- One-to-one tutorials (by appointment)
- Guest lecturers and visits to construction sites, completed buildings etc.
You will be assessed through a combination of exams, projects and coursework:

The School of the Built Environment (SoBE) aims to transform the quality of life for society and the well being of future generations through a better and more sustainable urban future. With a focus on architecture, building and construction, SoBE has over 1,000 undergraduates, 800 postgraduates, and over 200 PhD research students from across the world. Having led the built environment research agenda for more than 20 years, our rich community of internationally recognised scholars works with students, business and industry across all levels of study and research.
Our carefully designed architecture studios provide an inspiring environment to develop ideas, work collaboratively and share best practice. We also have workshops which house high specification equipment, including laser cutters and 3-D printers, to help you bring your ideas and concepts to life.
The School of the Built Environment is also home to the unique Energy House – the only fully climate controlled research facility in the world. Built in 2011, this full sized two bedroom terraced house is built inside an environmental chamber that can replicate almost any weather conditions. It is fully furnished and packed with a vast array of sensors that can monitor a wide range of variables.
What about after uni?
Architects are highly valued in many sectors and work widely throughout the sector, including architectural practices (i.e. Foster and Partners, KPF, etc.), design and engineering consultancy firms (Arup, Buro Happold, BDP, etc).
Architects are also sought after by central government, local authorities, property developers, building contractors, housing associations, financial institutions, major retailers and manufacturing companies.
We offer specialism postgraduate study options to help you take your architecture career even further. We even offer a sizeable fee discount to our graduates and alumni.
Our experienced team maintain strong links with the architecture, engineering and construction sectors, including local and international architectural practices. This strong link with the professions ensures a stimulating range of external guest lecturers, as well as networking opportunities.
Throughout the course, you will get to work on ‘live’ development projects. Previous students have helped to design a new club-house for Salford City FC, created designs for Macclesfield Cricket Club and developed concepts for the Salford Woolpack community pub.
What you need to know
This course is ideal for those with an interest in building design who want to combine highly imaginative creative design skills with the sound technical and management knowledge base that is essential for success in today’s design, architecture and construction industries.
All candidates are required to submit a portfolio. Letters of verification confirming that the portfolio is your own work must accompany the portfolio. For example, the letter can be on the School/ College headed paper and signed by a tutor. In the case of mature students, the letter should be written and signed by someone with connections to the industry – e.g. an architect or interior designer. Guidance for portfolio preparation and submission are provided. Please, make sure you follow the recommendations. In addition to our academic entry requirements, we also look for certain characteristics in each student. Possessing these characteristics will not only help you to fulfil your potential at university but is also an essential requirement for a successful career in the built environment.
All our courses are management focused; therefore leadership skills and a hard-working approach are important. The built environment caters for many different skills from creativity and original thinking to efficiency and technical ability, so you should be willing to develop in new areas.
The modern built environment industry relies on a multidisciplinary team-based approach to work. In this programme, you will have the opportunity to work in a group, so it is essential that you are a good team player.
Most importantly we want you to have a real passion for developing, advancing and shaping the future of interior architecture.
You will need to have a minimum of a grade C / Grade 4 in Maths and English at GCSE (or equivalent). A mixture of science/maths and humanities/arts subjects is preferred at A-level or equivalent.
All candidates must submit a portfolio. Letters of verification confirming that the portfolio is your own work must accompany the portfolio. For example, the letter can be on the School/College headed paper and signed by your tutor. For mature students, the letter should be written and signed by someone with a connection to industry. Successful completion of the course can lead to future entry onto ARB and RIBA accredited architecture programmes.

International applicants will be required to show proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 with no band below 5.5 is proof of this.

We welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to pursue the course successfully. Once we have received your application we will assess it and recommend it for SAES if you are an eligible candidate.
There are two different routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. Assessment will either be through a review of prior learning or through a formal test.
