With a record of expertise in sports analytics, marketing and economics, Salford Business School’s reputation for sports research and knowledge is befitting of a region that is home to two of the most valuable football clubs in the world.

With an industry-informed curriculum that combines business management and sports modules, this programme gives passionate and ambitious individuals the skills, knowledge and industry experience necessary for a managerial career in the sports industry.

Our close partnerships with a number of sports organisations (for example, Salford Red Devils and Manchester Storm elite ice hockey) through our Centre for Sports Business, ensure that our curriculum meets the current needs of employers and that you receive fantastic opportunities for networking and work placements.

All about the course

During the first year of your programme, you’ll develop an understanding of the core principles that underpin Business Management with Sport as an area of academic study. As the course progresses, you’ll have the opportunity to specialise through optional modules, undertake a year-long work placement and prepare yourself for the world of work through our Professional Development module.

Under the supervision of our academics and support staff at the Centre for Sports Business, you will gain the knowledge and learn the skills that will not only make you an attribute to the sports industry, but allow you to enter high-level employment across a variety of sectors.

Year one

Sports Development

Key content is delivered through lectures and seminars which explore the role and effect of policy-making on various user groups in society. Guest speakers support targeted areas of the syllabus to provide a sports industry viewpoint.

The module also provides an overview of the broader sports business landscape and how sports development has shaped policies and government oversight of sport in the UK as a whole.

Digital and Business Skills

Digital and Business Skills offers an introduction to fundamental skills you need for high level careers in a range of organisations. Communications, presentation and professional profile tools will be used to develop your knowledge and employability.

The Sporting Event Environment

On this module, you will develop your understanding and knowledge of the global sport events industry exploring the strategic importance of sports events through an economic, political, social and cultural lens. We will analyse and discuss contemporary issues and case studies related to sport and the sport event environment. We will also identify the importance of stakeholders and partnerships and will consider some of the operational elements of sport event planning including sustainability, logistics, Health and Safety, workforce and sponsorship. 

Principles of Accounting

This module gives you a theoretical and practical introduction to the basics of accounting, including how to prepare financial statements.

Principles of Human Resource Management

You will learn about the important contribution of Human Resource Management policy and practice to employee and organisational success in the UK and internationally.

Multi-level Business Project (year one)

The Multi-level Business Project is a unique module that gives you the opportunity to work collaboratively with students from different stages of the programme on a client project. Through this module, you will develop your critical thinking and use the knowledge and skills gained on the course to produce practical solutions for a client.

Year two

Sport in a Digital World

In Sport in a Digital World you will be introduced to the concepts that underpin digital technologies in sport, in addition to contemporary issues in the rapidly changing areas of digital practice, research and development. The module gives you the knowledge to critically appraise and respond to future technological developments applicable to sport.

Professional Development

In semester one, you will form teams with other students to come together and answer a live client brief with regular review points. In semester two, you will enhance your portfolio by creating more team-based and individual work.

Multi-level Business Project (year two)

In your second year of the Multi-level Business Project, you will adopt a more senior role within the multi-level group you are working in. You will be expected to make supportive suggestions regarding the techniques for scoping the project and identifying project objectives.

Business Research and Analysis Methods

In this module, you will develop the knowledge and skills required to evaluate published research and consultancy in relation to its methodology and findings. Through the use of a variety of methodologies and methods, you’ll develop an appreciation of the importance of business models.

Project Management

Project management is an important and integral part of a business whether this is product or service based. This module will help you develop knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of effective project management in a global business context.  

We will look at various aspects of Project Management through a variety of means such as lectures and practical seminars with input from our industry connections and the latest in research. We will examine the subject using theoretical approaches as well as the industry-recognised tools and techniques for planning and controlling projects

Optional placement year

Professional Experience Year

All of our BSc students can apply for a one year professional placement, which takes place between your second and last years of study.

This is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of and over the last five years, 90% of Salford Business School undergraduates taking a one year placement secured a 2:1 or 1st class Honours degree.

We will help you find out about vacancies and make the right connections with high profile employers through regular events and presentations.

Year three

Sport and Social Issues

This module examines the interface between sport and society; how trends in society manifest themselves in any sporting setting. We will also consider the broader influence that society has on sport and its behaviours.

We will explore the relationship between sport and society.  We will consider and debate specific sub-cultures and issues within society and within the local, national and global sporting environment including racism, homophobia, drugs and doping and gender roles and stereotypes. The link is also made to the ethical, legal, political and social environments within which these sub-cultures function. 

Business Ethics and Sustainability

This module equips you with an appreciation and an in-depth understanding of the implications of Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability in national and international organisations.

Business Entrepreneurial Simulation Project

In this module, you will work as part of a team in an online business simulation. Acting as the management team in a competitive business environment, you will solve business problems and learn about the relationships between different areas of business. This modules gives you a chance to test your entrepreneurship, business planning and your ability to manage change in an uncertain environment.

Consulting for Sport

In Consulting for Sport you will learn to understand, source, analyse and make use of business intelligence. You’ll gain practical experience of the process of innovating, planning and pitching for sports business and on completion of the module, you will be able to identify organisational problems from an external perspective and select innovative solutions. 

Strategic Management

You will acquire an organisation-wide perspective by exploring strategy techniques and processes operating in the global environment. This module prepares you for a career in business and management.

The Enterprise Challenge

Employers tell us that they are looking for employees with an entrepreneurial mindset.  Or perhaps you're thinking of setting up your own business.

On the Enterprise Challenge, you have the opportunity to undertake an enterprise project for an internal or external sponsor on a topic of common interest.  Alternatively, you can use this opportunity to undertake in-depth research for your own project, for example, a business plan if you are wanting to start up a company after you graduate. The nature of the project will be negotiated by yourself, the module leader and the sponsoring company. 

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

What Will I be Doing?

TEACHING

Our teaching is industry-led, inspired by contemporary practice and developed in partnership with business leaders. Our academics are experts in their field and work closely with industry to ensure that our courses reflect the needs of business and provides you with that extra edge when it comes to securing a job.

Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities. You will experience small group tutorials during your first and second year module studies. This ensures you will be highly skilled in time for your placements, year abroad experience and final year studies.

ASSESSMENT

Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules and years, but exams still play a major role.

The University library isn’t just for reading books.  The ‘library in the park’ is a fresh, modern learning space with PC suites, Mac computers, bookable working rooms and café. It's open 24/7 everyday of the year (except Christmas Day!) so you can study when it suits you. The dedicated library support staff will give you excellent support there and they also offer a range of study skills sessions to help you be successful in your studies and in your work.  These include:

UniSkills, an online learning course designed to develop the study, research and digital skills you will need for studying in higher education and your lifelong learning journey. You can also earn digital badges for successfully completing the UniSkills assessment.

Wordscope, designed to help you improve and develop your academic writing skills.

Microsoft Office Specialist certification, awarded by Microsoft, helps you develop your skills and demonstrate to future employers your proficiency in Microsoft Office programmes such as Outlook, Project, Powerpoint and others.

Salford Business School has established strong links with many organisations who place a high value on our students. In addition to the work placement, you may also undertake a number of occupational modules that will enable you to develop skills required for the workplace.

For example, you will develop your work skills relevant through modules such as Event Planning and Development, Sports Leadership, Sports Development, Sport Psychology and Sport and Social issues.

We maintain strong links with regional sports teams including both Salford Red Devils and Manchester Storm.

APPLICANT PROFILE 

This course offers excellent scope for any student wanting to start a career in sport, management, finance, marketing and a variety of other different business areas. Knowledge and expertise in sport and business are highly sought after by employers across a wide variety of sectors. This course will appeal to a range of applicants and there is no need to have studied these subjects before to be successful. 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 (no element below 5.5) is proof of this.

Alternative entry requirements

Salford Alternative Entry Scheme

We welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to pursue the course successfully. Once we have received your application we will assess it and recommend it for SAES if you are an eligible candidate.

There are two different routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. Assessment will either be through a review of prior learning or through a formal test.
