All about the course
Graduates who can effectively apply academic knowledge of business, management and law are highly sought after by employers. At Salford Business School, we ensure that there is an industry focus at the heart of every programme we deliver. This means that the modules you study have been designed to reflect the current needs of employers and to be relevant to current business trends. Throughout your course, you will develop the core knowledge of key business and legal concepts that employers look for.
Right from the start of your studies you will develop the practical skills as well as the academic knowledge that you will need when you begin working. In your first year, the Digital and Business Skills module sharpens up the skills and knowledge that will be important for you when you are looking for a job. The Professional Development module in second year will help you to focus on your employability and the enhancement of your professional skills. The professional experience year, offered after your second year of study, gives you the opportunity to put your skills and knowledge into practice, improve your employability and earn a salary for the work you do.
Economics for Business is designed to give you an understanding of the economic basis of business. You will learn about how businesses operate in the UK and internationally, explore the economic principles behind government industrial policies and analyse macroeconomic policy and its effect on businesses.
Foundations of Business
This module will introduce you to key concepts of business and management. You will develop an understanding of the key functions used within contemporary businesses and learn about the tools and techniques used in business to conduct analysis and plan.
Foundations of Human Resource Management
Foundations of HRM provides you with a basic introduction to Human Resource Management. You will learn about the five key areas of the HRM discipline: employee resourcing, employee reward, performance management, employee relations and employee training and development.
IT Skills for Business
Through IT Skills for Business, you will be introduced to the concept of an information system and learn about its relevance to business. You will also explore different systems used in business and develop your skills and knowledge of a range of essential digital tools.
Academic Study Skills
Academic Study Skills helps you to develop the key skills required for successful study at university level.
Principles of Marketing
This module provides an introduction to key foundational aspects of the theory and practice of marketing, which are essential to the long term prosperity of organisations and applicable to all specialisations within business. It will enable students to apply marketing principles to real life marketing situations.
Principles of Human Resource Management
You will learn about the important contribution of Human Resource Management policy and practice to employee and organisational success in the UK and internationally.
Principles of Accounting
This module gives you a theoretical and practical introduction to the basics of accounting, including how to prepare financial statements.
Digital and Business Skills
Digital and Business Skills offers an introduction to the fundamental skills you need for high level careers in a range of organisations. Communications, presentation and professional profile tools will be used to develop your knowledge and employability.
In your first semester, you will follow the Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) which helps you to develop your digital skills through a series of online challenges and events. This looks great on the CV too!
Management of Business Operations
In this module you will learn about the management of business operations with a focus on the key processes within an organisation and the impact of the external environment they operate in.
Law for Business
This module aims to give you an appreciation of how English law is created and prepares you for more specialist business law modules in your second and third years of study. You will develop an understanding of the aspect of English law that impact critically upon business practice and learn how to apply legal rules to solve organisational problems.
This module will enable you to plan and carry out appropriate professional development activities to increase your employability and performance. These include self-presentation, professional networking, project planning and implementation, team working, influencing and multimedia communication. You will gain all the necessary experience required to take advantage of global employment opportunities.
This module focuses on developing an understanding of the interrelationships and behavioural manifestations at three levels of analysis in organisations, namely: individual, group and organisational. You will also explore the dynamic nature of personal, social and professional relationships across a broad range of business, public and voluntary organisations and the broader international external environment.
This module will help you develop knowledge and critical understanding of the principles of effective project management in a global business context. You will become skilled in project management techniques, methods and tools, and their applications and limitations.
Legal Aspects of Business
This module introduces you to the operation of global legal systems and the areas of law that underpin the practice of effective business management. You will develop a working knowledge of law relating to contracts and their effective negotiation in different business environments.
Employee Engagement and Rewards
Through this module, you will learn how to apply theory relating to employee engagement in organisational settings. You will explore and critically analyse the appropriateness in variations in pay and reward systems in UK organisations.
You will look at the history, context, implications, and regulation of media law. Considering some of the legal, moral, social and political debates which exist in this area of law. Issues such as the freedom of the press, reporting restrictions and pretrial publicity will be examined as well as defamation, privacy and harassment.

Professional Experience Year
All of our BSc students can apply for a one year professional placement, which takes place between your second and last years of study.This is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of and over the last five years 90% of Salford Business undergraduates taking a one year placement secured a 2:1 or 1st class Honours degree.

Business Ethics and Sustainability
This module equips you with an appreciation and in-depth understanding of the implications of Business Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability within national and international organisations. This module will also develop your knowledge with respect to the importance of the balance between shareholders, stakeholders and the purpose and values of the organisation. It will explore the roles of social and technological innovation in global ethical organisations in order to prepare you for future employability.
This module offers an organisational perspective by exploring strategy techniques and processes. You will apply your knowledge and understanding of strategy to a variety of real world organisations, using analysis and enquiry techniques at the forefront of strategic research and practice. This will prepare you for a career in business and management and enable you to reach your potential as a next generation manager.
This module provides you with a broad and comprehensive understanding of the way in which the employment relationship is experienced, regulated and contested in a variety of contrasting organisations in both the UK and internationally. Real-life practical case study examples are used and advice is supported by research and engagement with a range of external HRM managers and other employment relations practitioners.
You will explore the rights and obligations that arise directly and indirectly from the employment relationship.
Practice of Company and Partnership Law
This module covers the law relating to the formation, financing and management of companies, and related corporate activity.
Service Sector Entrepreneurship
Service Sector Entrepreneurship provides you with a course of study in entrepreneurship, business risk analysis, legislation ethics and social responsibility in small business development. The programme is designed to allow you to critically evaluate environmental, operational and strategic factors involved in the setup of a service business.
Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.
What Will I be Doing?
Our teaching is industry-led, inspired by contemporary practice and developed in partnership with business leaders. Our academics are experts in their field and work closely with industry to ensure that our courses reflect the needs of business and provides you with that extra edge when it comes to securing a job.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials using a wide range of learning activities. You will experience small group tutorials during your first and second year module studies. This ensures you will be highly skilled in time for your placements, year abroad experience and final year studies.
Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules and years, but exams still play a major role.

What about after uni?
Business Management with Law equips graduates with skills and knowledge that are applicable to a variety of sectors and positions. With the option to take part in a paid work placement following your second year, you won’t only gain an understanding of key theories and concepts, but learn how to put them into practice in a real-world setting.

What you need to know
This course offers excellent scope for any student wanting to start a career in management, finance, law and a variety of other different business areas. Knowledge and expertise in law and business are highly sought after by employers across a wide variety of sectors. This course will appeal to a range of applicants and there is no need to have studied these subjects before to be successful.

Maths and English at grade C or grade 4 or above (applicants who do not have the equivalent of grade C or above, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English will be considered on a case by case basis).

Salford Alternative Entry Scheme
We welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to pursue the course successfully. Once we have received your application we will assess it and recommend it for SAES if you are an eligible candidate.
There are two different routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. Assessment will either be through a review of prior learning or through a formal test.
