The University of Salford holds a licence with the CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) which allows us to legally create or source digital copies of copyrighted items so that you can make them available to your students electronically. Full details of the licence can be found on the CLA website.

What can be scanned?

Our licence allows us to scan the following from any eligible title:

  • One chapter or 10% (whichever is greater) of any book.
  • One article from any journal issue.
  • Material that has originated from a country/publisher that is listed within the licence terms.

How do I make a request for an item to be scanned?

You can make a scanning request directly via the Reading List system.

  • Find the item you wish for us to scan and click on it to open up the citation.
  • Scroll down and click on "Digitisation Request" to open up the request form.
  • Fill in the chapter & page numbers as accurately as possible and click Submit.
  • That's it! We'll take it from there and get everything sorted for you.

(If there are any issues with this process, then please get in touch with us directly at: Library-ReadingLists@salford.ac.uk and provide us with the request details. We will be more than happy to process the request on your behalf).

What happens now?

  • We'll check library stock and our suppliers. There may be a chance that we'll purchase an eBook instead if possible.
  • We'll check the copyright status of the chapter or article to ensure we're allowed to make this available on your reading list.
  • If we have the item in stock, we will aim to complete the scanning process within three working days.
  • Once the scan is done, we will upload it to our online system and link it directly through to your reading list.
  • We'll then let you know that your scan is available.

If for any reason the requested scan can't be obtained, we'll get in touch and discuss any possible alternatives we can provide for you.
