How does it feel to work at Salford?
We’ve answered the needs of industry since 1896, when we began as the Salford Royal Technical Institute - we’ve now been a leading university for over 50 years. This is a time of huge change for Higher education. We're working hard to embrace these changes and our connection to industry is stronger than ever. We're proud to have more partnerships with SMEs than any other Greater Manchester university. It's everything we do and the way we do everything.
We remain committed to the wider Salford community by utilising our research expertise and encouraging students to engage with projects that benefit local residents and businesses.
It's a challenging world out there but with this come lots of opportunities to innovate and to make your mark.
Our aim is to create an inspirational, inclusive learning and working environment, celebrating the diversity of our University community in our everyday conversations.
Our green campus
Our location sets us apart. We're just 2km from Manchester, an internationally recognised city with a wealth of job opportunities in growing industries, such as digital, sports business and the built environment. We are champions of diversity – Greater Manchester is one of the most diverse city regions in the UK with over 200 languages spoken.
We're a campus university which means you'll find a range of amenities right here on site. On our Peel Park campus you'll find lots of food and drink options from Costa Coffee, Subway and our student shop to our sports centre and library. We are the only university with a MediaCityUK campus, sitting right next to neighbours such as ITV and the BBC. Here you'll find lots more options with the Lowry Outlet and Theatre right on the doorstep.
Getting between our two campuses is simple and free with a regular bus service in operation.
Both our campuses are easily accessible via public transport. There's a train station on Peel Park campus and a tram station at MediaCityUK as well as main bus routes in and out of Manchester City Centre.
Did you know? Peel Park was the first public park to open in 1846. Sir Robert Peel, the former Prime Minister, oversaw significant legislation on social and economic policies, specifically the working rights of women and children.
With so many options and locations on campus, we encourage all colleagues to discuss different ways of working with their line manager to enable them to work from wherever works best for them. That might mean either our Peel or MediaCityUK campus or exploring other remote working options. Our enterprise license for Microsoft Office 365 means you can be connected to your work from wherever you are! We also have a number of other Enterprise licenses for industry leading software you need to do your best work including Creative Cloud suite and Autodesk.
Many of our research facilities are also industry leading from Energy House, a scale house testing facility that's supporting work on sustainable housing, to our cutting edge Simulation suites, creating real life scenarios to support teaching.
We're not just about technology! We also celebrate culture with comedy, plays, music and films at the New Adelphi Theatre (pictured below).
Building an inclusive and diverse workplace
We have a range of colleague networks that are available to support colleagues, raise issues and to be a voice to represent colleague interests. The networks are an opportunity to meet other colleagues, develop and have a say in how we deliver on our ambition to create an inspirational, inclusive learning and working environment, celebrating the diversity of our University community in our everyday conversations.
There are currently five colleague networks – Parents Network, Salford Proud, BAME Network, Women’s Voice and Menopause Support Group, and SalfordAbility with plans for more to be launched soon. Each network promotes awareness events throughout the year for students and colleagues alongside playing an active role in our overall strategic decision making.
In addition to our colleague networks, the Faith Centre reflects our continuing commitment to support the student experience. Our extensive faith-based facilities are a rare gem for UK universities. It offers a unique space for those with or without faith to come together and build connections.
Our "living library" also offers a unique opportunity to share experiences.
Just as we try to foster a sense of ownership in our students, we aim to create an environment where colleagues are trusted and empowered to work their own hours. Here we encourage you to share ideas and find the ways of working that work best for you.
There is a real sense of belonging here at Salford. We’re proud of our diverse student, colleague and alumni population. We aim to raise the aspirations for all of our students and colleagues, providing a level playing field regardless of their background. Here the focus isn't on what you do but how we do it using our Salford behaviours to guide us to do more of what makes the this a great place to work and challenge where this isn’t the case. We look to create opportunities to bring our diverse community together such as Salford conversations where our colleagues can come together to network and share their ideas.
We celebrate colleagues’ success across campus through our University wide recognition scheme where colleagues can recognise peers and teams. We also run regular recognition events alongside our Vice Chancellor and Women's Voice awards. We never miss an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work that happens across the University.
Here you're surrounded by experts; Experts that are doing work that’s changing the world. Our Salford Lecture Series is a chance to listen to work going on at the University and share your work.
We believe that learning is all around us. We encourage our colleagues to feed their curiosity and explore their development in a variety of ways from more traditional classroom offerings to on demand online learning through LinkedIn learning and e-resources available through their library membership.
