Three students from the University of Salford have been shortlisted in the prestigious Student Nursing Times Awards.

Melissa Connelly, Aisha Hussain and Charmaine Bolton have been nominated for the awards in recognition of their achievements during their studies.

Aisha has been shortlisted in the category of “Student Nurse of the Year: Children”. This award is for exceptional students who advocate for children who are undergoing treatment for serious or long-term conditions, as well as their parents or carers. Aisha said: “I’m so overwhelmed and excited to be shortlisted! I am really grateful for this opportunity and for all the support given to me by my tutors, staff and colleagues.”

Charmaine is shortlisted in the “Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs” category for her work as part of the student nursing society to help organise events and make sure other student nurses have the best possible opportunities and experiences at the university. She said: “Being shortlisted for this award is a tremendous honour, I look forward to the judging next month in London and representing the University of Salford (and bragging about how awesome our student nurses are here up north!).”

Melissa is shortlisted for “Student Midwife of the Year”. This award celebrates the incredible understanding and communication skills needed to take on a career in midwifery - including clinical skills, academic achievement and excellent interpersonal skills. Melissa said: "I was really surprised when I heard the news that I had been shortlisted - it wasn’t something that I was expecting at all! But I’m equally really proud; it’s something special that I’ll always remember."

Margaret Rowe, Dean of the School of Health and Society at the University of Salford, said: “We are so proud of Melissa, Aisha and Charmaine. To have three students from our university shortlisted is fantastic and shows the incredible talent and dedication of our nursing and midwifery students here at Salford. We wish all of them the best of luck!”

The winners will be announced on Friday 24 April at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
