The £1m state-of-the art 3G pitch was opened this week, with the first games and training sessions taking place. As well as providing a space for university teams it can also be hired by anyone else, proving a key community sport facility.

Situated on David Lewis sports fields, between the university and Broughton, the pitch is fully floodlit and can be used by football or rugby for matches and training for a wide range of teams. It has been under construction since September last year.

The new surface will allow sport to continue whatever the weather. Last year over 100 sessions were abandoned due to grass pitches being unsuitable for play.

Hazel Taylor, Head of Facilities for accommodation and sport, said: “This is a real game changer for sport both at the university and for the community round us.

“Previously our teams have had to travel all over the region to get to home pitches or for training and often when it was wet the games couldn’t go ahead.

“With this new pitch we can create more of a team atmosphere at home games, people on campus will be able to come and watch.

“And of course schools and community groups, as well as sports teams are welcome to get in touch with us and book the facility. It is great news for the health and wellbeing of students and staff and provides a much needs facility for Salford.”

The pitch is available for community at certain times and days. For more information on how to hire the pitch contact the following: 0161 295 5060 or email sportleisure-com@salford.ac.uk.
