How to borrow books

Main collections

You may borrow books from our main collections for up to 13 weeks.

For staff and postgraduate students, the loan period is up to 52 weeks.

If all copies of the book you require are on loan you may request a copy through Click and Collect and we will email you once it is available.

If another customer requests the book, you will need to return it, if this is the case, we will contact you.

Reference material

Some items are for use in the library only and may not be borrowed. These are marked 'Reference'.

How do I borrow a book?

You can use the self-service machines to borrow books at Clifford Whitworth and Media City Libraries. These are located near the entrance at Clifford Whitworth and on the 3rd floor at Media City.

Instructions for using the self-issue machines are displayed on the touch screens but please do ask a member of Library staff for help if you need it.

You will be unable to use the self-service machines if:

  • You have reached your loan limit
  • Your Library card is blocked due to unpaid fines/overdue loans and recalls
  • Your Library card is damaged
  • Your Library card is expired

If your card isn’t working, please contact a member of staff and we will assist you.

Finding Resources for Assessments

We've developed a short 15-minute eLearning course to help you use Library Search to find the right resources for your assignments. After this course you will:

  • Know how to perform a search for different types of academic information in Library Search.

  • Know how to use filters to make your results more relevant.

  • Have experienced using Library Search to find great quality academic information.

  • Know how Library Search can help you create References.

How Click & Collect works

To borrow a book from the library, follow these steps:

  • Search for the book on Library Search and click request (up to five books per visit).
  • Wait for an email confirmation to your student email address.
  • Go to the request shelf near the host desk and find your book by surname.
  • Use the self-service machines by the entrance with your student ID to borrow the book.

If you can't collect the book yourself, email library@salford.ac.uk with your name, the name of the person who will collect it, and the date and time of collection. They will need your ID card to get the book for you.

Remember to use the self service machines to issue your collected items to your Library account.
