Gown Hire
On this page we take you through what gown, hood and cap you need for your Graduation ceremony and how you can purchase or hire these through Ede & Ravenscroft. Already know what you need? Order your gown through Ede & Ravenscroft now.
You are required to wear a specific cap, hood and gown during Graduation (we’ll refer to all these items as a ‘gown’ from now on). This is an important part of the ceremony – you won’t be allowed to cross the stage without a gown. The gown you’re required to wear for Graduation is dependent on the level of qualification you have achieved – you can see a guide below.
You can either hire your gown for the day of your ceremony (this is what most graduates do) or purchase it.
- Hiring a gown: You will collect this on the day of your Graduation ceremony after you have checked in.
- Purchasing a gown: If you decide to purchase a gown to keep, it will be posted to an address of your choosing in advance of the ceremony. If purchasing a gown, please ensure this is delivered to a private secure address. Do not have it delivered to the University.
Ordering your gown
You order your gown directly through our partners, Ede & Ravenscroft, but please note that you need to have hired these items at least three weeks before your ceremony. To book your gown via the Ede & Ravenscroft website, you need the following details:
- Institution name (the University of Salford)
- Ceremony date and time (e.g. 18 July 2023, 10:15)
- Award details (the level of qualification you have achieved. You can find this information in the section below
If you have not yet completed your course (i.e. you haven’t received your final marks) and you’re not sure whether you will receive an Ordinary Degree or an Honours Degree, choose the award that you are on track for achieving. You can change the gown you have selected with Ede & Ravenscroft at a later date if your award is incorrect.

Bachelor's Degree (BA, BEng, BSc)

Bachelor's with Honours Degree (BA (Hons), BSC (Hons), BEng (Hons))

- a hood of simple shape in mid blue silk, fully lined with gold satin. Cowl edge faced inside two inches with grey silk;
- a mortarboard of black cloth.

Masters (Taught by Coursework) (MA, MBA, MEnt, LLM, MSc)

- a hood of simple shape in mid blue silk, lined and cape edge bound 3/8" with gold satin. Cowl edge faced inside three inches with grey silk;
- a mortarboard of black cloth.

Masters degrees fall into either taught or research. Taught masters are delivered and assessed through a series of taught modules that may include independent research. It's important that you select the right type of Masters as the hoods are different for each qualification.
Masters (by Research) (LLM, MPhil)
- a gown of black cloth of the London Masters pattern; (not shown);
- a hood of simple shape in mid blue silk and lined with gold satin. Cowl edge faced inside three inches and bound 3/8" of scarlet satin and cape edge faced inside two inches and bound 3/8" of scarlet satin;
- a mortarboard of black cloth.

Masters degrees fall into either taught or research. Research Masters involve submission of a completed thesis based on an independent research project. It's important that you select the right type of Masters as the hoods are different for each qualification.
Integrated Masters Degree (MChem, MEng, MEnv, MPhys)

- a hood of simple shape in mid blue silk, fully lined in gold satin. Cowl edge faced inside three inches and bound 3/8" with light blue silk;
- a mortarboard of black cloth.

Foundation Degree (FdA, FdEng, FdSc)

- a hood of simple shape in mid blue silk, lined in blue and tipped in gold satin;
- a mortarboard of black cloth.

Higher Doctorate (DSc, DLitt)
- a gown of scarlet cloth of the London Doctors pattern, with five inch facings of, and sleeves lined in, gold satin; (not shown);
- a hood of simple shape in dark blue, lined and bound 3/8" with gold satin;
- a black velvet bonnet with gold cord and tassels.
