Field trips and placements

Fieldwork and practical placements encourage and prepare you for the application of scientific method and technique in the real world. They are pivotal to our courses and to the development of the skills you will need after graduation.

Field trips

Depending on what you choose to study in the School, field trips will vary. They can range from day trips to the Peak District or the Yorkshire Dales, to residential field courses in the Lake District and Wales, to international locations previously including Scandinavia, the Alps and Brazil. Most of our field trips are free whilst others are heavily subsidised by the School and you will be made aware of all costs before committing to a field trip.

Three reasons our students love field trips

1.

"The field trips were varied and interesting, with a good mixture of teaching and downtime” - Matt Ashmore BSc (Hons) Geography

2.

"Field trips open up so many doors and also break down the teacher/student barrier, so they know you as an individual” – Evie Adams BSc (Hons) Wildlife and Practical Conservation

3.

“We can really apply what we’re learning in lectures in the field and actually see it and utilise it in a practical way, which gives us more skills than just being in a lecture room.” – Lori Moore BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation and Zoo Biology

Placements

Most of our courses offer you the opportunity to complete a year in industry after the second year of your degree or you can opt to complete a shorter placement or internship over the summer. Due to our strong relationships with industry, the University of Salford has secured a range of research and training opportunities with leading companies and research institutes.

SEE placements

Three reasons our students found a placement beneficial

1.

“I spent my placement year working within Wirral Borough Council’s Environmental Health department. No two days were ever the same, and the practical experience complemented the theory taught” – Daniel Dawson BSc (Hons) Environmental Management

2.

"My placement provided invaluable experience in planning and conducting line transects, plant quadrat surveys and species monitoring – as well as learning Portuguese as a second language!” – Nathan Nicholls BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation and Zoo Biology

3.

"My placement was a rewarding experience - I was involved in synthesising compounds and evaluating their biological activities through microbiology testing and cell culture." - Zakia Zia BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science with Professional Experience
