All about the course
The programme is block delivered and there are six entry points per year. Students will take the modules below in a sequence dependent on their start date.
The aim of this course is to provide you with the advanced level skills and knowledge required by 21st century managers of information systems and technology (IS/T).
You will acquire the management and technical knowledge necessary to succeed in an IS/T management role and to be able to make decisions in complex and unpredictable situations.
You will develop a systematic understanding of the context of IS/T in local and global organisations and in society in general; and a critical awareness of current issues in the management of IS/T.
You will also become a reflective practitioner in the IS sphere, capable of critically reflecting on your practice and that of others.
You will gain a thorough grounding in the major issues and perspectives of management, with a particular focus on strategic, global and organisational issues in an international context. You’ll also get an overview of key issues and decisions relating to the legal, social and ethical responsibilities of corporate management. You will be encouraged to think critically about theory and practice in an ethical and professional manner, in particular in light of key issues and decisions related to the strategic organisation in both national and international contexts. This module draws from findings from research into work and particular emphasis is placed on a number of theoretical and practical perspectives to enable you to better understand the world of work.
The Digital Innovation module has been designed specifically to equip you with the practical and theoretical skills needed for contemporary business settings; you will gain an understanding of the role of strategic business models that can exploit innovative and disruptive technologies such as Google Glass, 3D printing, and wearable technologies. The module will encourage you to critically assess how social, disruptive and innovative technologies can become key business enablers and facilitate strategic competitive advantages; this critical awareness will be underpinned by cutting-edge academic and practitioner research.
You will learn about professional, business and societal issues in the planning and developmental process of information systems.
Project Management, Leadership and Skills, Planning and Control
You will learn about the approaches, skills and methods of effective project management, and the tools and techniques required for planning, control, teamwork, leadership and other key processes. All of these qualities will develop your ability to lead complex projects.
This module offers a programme of research, reflection, structured learning and writing that helps you develop and understand the critical and contextual framework that underpins your practice, and articulate more effectively the relationship between theory and practice.
This is a group project (teams of two to five students) examining an organisational problem or opportunity. Students work on sizeable commercial projects, which are broken down by the team. Live projects reflect the commercial reality of delivering complex commercial projects through the combined efforts of a committed team. You will produce a group presentation and executive report, coupled with an individual 8-10,000 word report for assessment.
This involves working on a company project. You will spend a minimum of three days per week on the project brief with a total of 300 hours being available to complete the project. You will normally be based in the University but will spend significant time in the organisation. The majority of internships are voluntary unpaid positions, but you will gain significant real-world experience. In many cases students are supported in finding and securing internships with the support of the School’s Employability Hub. You will produce a 30-40 minute commercial presentation and 10,000 word professional dissertation for assessment.
The placement provides you with the opportunity to gain work experience to support your academic learning. You will work full time with your employer for four to six months on paid work experience implementing a commercial project. You will produce a portfolio of work, visitor assessment, presentation and interim report, culminating in a work related dissertation of 10,000 words.
- Placements can be undertaken in the UK or overseas.
- You can undertake your placements with your sponsor or employing organisation.
- For international students placements are six months maximum due to visa restrictions.
- For home/EU students, placements can possibly be extended to 12 months.
- You will be paid a salary for the duration of your placement.
What will I be doing?
The programme is delivered via blended learning mostly online via OnlineCampus (an interactive online learning environment) with intensive class discussion and collaboration. There is a one-week compulsory residency held in Salford, UK or Zürich, Switzerland.
During your course, a range of assessment techniques will be used.

What about after uni?
This course has been specifically designed to enable recent IT and related subject graduates develop their careers. Information systems management is part of a continually evolving sector, and graduates who can apply critical thinking to technology are in high demand across a variety of organisations in both the public and private sectors.
The University of Salford grew out of the institutes of the late 19th century that provided a talented, technically proficient and professional workforce to support the UK’s rapidly growing industries. The Business Innovation Project, which forms the final third of your study, is designed to give you real-world experience so you can apply the theory you have learned.
What you need to know
This course offers excellent scope if you are an aspiring or existing manager who wants to improve their career development opportunities. You will add significantly to your existing IS/T skills for business, and be able to apply this knowledge effectively in complex organisational settings.
Normally a minimum 2:2 honours degree or equivalent or successful completion of the Graduate Certificate.
Accreditation of Prior Learning
We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.
Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
