Introduction

In a nutshell

This master’s level apprenticeship programme is designed to provide students with an advanced, integrated and applied research informed leadership and management curriculum appropriate to global contemporary business environments. Students will learn about, and critically evaluate, evidence-based best practice with the aim of informing and improving their management skills. The apprenticeship programme will develop the practitioners of the future who are capable of reflecting on their own contribution using ethical, responsible and sustainable methodologies.

The apprenticeship is a combination of an academic programme and work-based learning. The University is responsible for the degree programme and the employer is responsible for delivering the work-based learning.

Course details

All about the course

You will study a core curriculum that focuses on how organisations function and the role of a leader within an organisation.  

There are two distinct components to the degree apprenticeship – the academic degree programme and the work-based assessment. The University – as lead provider – is responsible for delivering the degree programme. The employer is responsible for delivering the work-based assessment components. The University and employer work closely with each other to:

  • Assure that knowledge you gain on the degree is successfully applied in the workplace
  • To ensure that the standards and practices required to meet the professional competencies contained in the apprenticeship standard are adequately evidenced by you
     
Year 1

Developing Strategic Leadership Skills

This module will allow you to develop your self-awareness of their personal attributes, leadership behaviours and preferences, in terms of (a) how these compare with the CIPD behaviours map and professional standards, and (b) how they may impact on others, including those from different cultural contexts. It will equip you with an understanding of a range of leadership and management behaviours along with HR strategies/practices that are underpinned by theory and evidence.

Management Decision Making

This module will allow you to develop a critical awareness of the links between management accounting, organisational control and strategic/operational decision making in contemporary organisations. It will also allow you to develop the necessary skills to use key accounting information in order to make strategic and operational managerial decisions in the contemporary business environment.

Marketing and Operations

This module covers:

  • Evaluation of existing ideas and themes in the broader field of marketing.
  • The synergies between marketing and operations management in order to evaluate critically, the most contemporary frameworks for effective working.
  • Analysis of the alternative methods and techniques for marketing and operations in manufacturing, service and international settings.
Year 2

Resourcing for High Performance

This module will equip learners with an understanding of the changing nature of the workforce and the way in which increasing diversity can be an organisational asset. It will also provide learners with the information and skills needed to recruit and select appropriate talent for their organisations, in a valid, ethical and legally compliant manner.

Work Based Project

This module will enable you to make explicit the link between theory and work-based practice and to allow you to develop as reflective practitioners. This will be done as a project based on a work-based issue/problem in your workplace.

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

How will the programme be taught?

The programme structure will be delivered to degree apprentices on a block basis over a two-and-a-half-year period, subject to agreement by the employer and the university. You will study for two consecutive days each month on campus and then will continue the rest of your studies in the workplace. 

Apprentices may start at any one of three points in the year – September, January and June.

You will participate in off the job training for two days per month during your studies with work based learning being supported as part of your work commitment.
A variety of teaching and learning methods with be employed, as appropriate, these include:

What about after uni?

Upon graduation you will hold an MSc Leadership and Management master’s qualification. You may continue to progress with your employer or move to another employer to develop your career.

WHICH QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?

The total cost of this apprenticeship is £18,000. The cost of the apprenticeship will be covered by your employer and/or the government. You will need to cover the cost of any study materials plus travel to and from campus if required.

Additional costs

APPRENTICESHIP FUNDING

The apprenticeship levy was introduced in April 2017 and requires all employers operating in the UK, with a pay bill of over £3 million each year to invest in apprenticeships.

The funding policy supports the changes to the way apprenticeships in England are paid for, underpinned by the apprenticeship levy of 0.5% of the annual pay bill for companies paying over £3 million per year.

There is also a co-investment model for companies who will not be paying into the levy. The government will cover 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship and the employer will only have to contribute the remaining 5%. Once payments have been declared to HMRC, employers will now have access to a digital apprenticeship account from which they will be able to access funding to pay for apprenticeship training.
