In a nutshell

Real estate surveyors have an extensive understanding of the property industry, and confidently display their professional knowledge to clients.  Property valuation is at the heart of the course that will prepare you for a lucrative and rewarding career in this fast-paced sector with Salford.  A gateway to professional status, our popular Real Estate Surveying course is accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), so you will be educated to the highest industry standards.  75% of staff teaching on the course are members of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors with 50% still in practice, ensuring that you are taught by leaders in the profession.  Our students are further supported on completion of the course when they undertake their Assessment of Professional Competence with the RICS as 50% of staff are acting assessors and counsellors for the RICS.

We work closely with industry so you're equipped with the professional, technical and collaborative skills to build a lucrative and rewarding career.

The degree apprenticeship route will allow you to work and study for your degree at the same time meaning you will have a minimum of three years work experience upon graduation. Your employer and/or the government will pay your tuition fees for your apprenticeship programme and you will be earning a salary at the same time. 

As part of this programme you will work towards your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) in order to be in a position to move onto the RICS Panel Exam following completion of the academic
degree programme. In order for you to do this, your employer must be able to support you with this – this is a requirement of the apprenticeship, therefore we can only work with employers who are in a position to support this. Please see full requirements

All about the course

Collaboration is at the heart of the built environment profession and our BSc (Hons) Real Estate Surveying courses combine theoretical knowledge with the application of professional skills and competencies.

We can provide you information on the course timetables, however, please bear in mind that this is for the current academic year and is subject to alterations each academic year. You can click the link here to access the current timetables.

Timetable

Timetabling works with the Schools to construct an annual programme timetable which includes all of a student’s teaching events – lectures, seminars and tutorials. You would be sent the timetable for your course and year once you registered as a student at the university.

In addition to this, you can see an overview of the 2017/18 academic year here. This will show you the breakdown of each semester, the vacation times and so forth. 

There are two distinct components to the degree apprenticeship – the academic degree programme and the work-based assessment. The University – as lead provider – is responsible for delivering the degree programme. The employer is responsible for delivering the work-based assessment components. The University and employer work closely with each other to:

  1. Assure that knowledge you gain on the degree is successfully applied in the workplace
  2. To ensure that the standards and practices required to meet the professional competencies contained in the apprenticeship standard are adequately evidenced by you

Year One

Economics and Management

You will develop an understanding of basic economic concepts and principles and of the economic environment, in which the construction and property sectors operate. The module will develop your knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of the construction environment within which you will operate as well as management and organisational theories in the construction and property context.

Introduction to Real Estate Practice

This module focuses on measurement, inspection, RICS ethics, RICS Surveying Safely and Real Estate Practice

Valuation and Accounting Principles

This module introduces you to valuation (including all valuation formulae and mathematics, Terms of Engagement and basic valuation reports for residential premises.) You will also be introduced to relevant software including the use of iSurv and mapping tools. 

The module also covers information that you will need to gain their level 1 knowledge in accounting including profit and loss statements, balance sheets and acid test ratios.

Environment Science and Services

This module covers information relevant to building inspection, such as heating, cooling and ventilation systems.

Technology One

This module focuses on domestic building construction

Introduction to Law and the Regulatory Framework

This module focuses on the English Legal System, the Law of Contract and Health and Safety Legislation

Year Two

Valuation (REP)

This module covers the RICS Valuation Global Standards 2017 and the five conventional methods of valuation and their appropriate uses, including valuing over-rented investments.  It also introduces you to the contemporary methods of valuation.

Property Law 1 (REP)

This module covers the Law of Tort, Dilapidations Schedules, the Control of Asbestos Regulations, Fire Safety Order, Alternative Dispute Resolution and an introduction to Landlord and Tenant legislation.

Technology 2 (REP)

This module examines commercial building construction.

Planning and Urban Regeneration

This module introduces our students to planning applications, planning policy, building control, development control and the planning, development and social issues surrounding urban regeneration.

Property Finance and Investment

This module focuses on portfolio theory, financing options and investment management.

Property Economics

This module introduces the students to the specifics of property economics including but not exclusively micro and macro markets.

Year three

Statutory Valuation (REP)

This module focuses on compulsory purchase and compensation, access and rights over land, local business rates and valuation according to lease terms.

Property Development (REP)

This module focuses on development appraisals and feasibility studies.

Interdisciplinary Project (REP)

This project enables you to gather all of the knowledge acquired over the three years of the course to be put to use in a real life project provided by our industry partners.  You will work with students from the building surveying programme to provide a viable solution and advice with regard to a particular problem, to understand how the disciplines integrate in real life.

Dissertation Research Project (RES)

This module enables you to produce a thesis on a property-related topic of your choice to enable you to demonstrate your research skills.

Advanced Valuation

This module focuses on more complex valuations including short-cut discounted cash flows, investment portfolio theory, net present values and internal rates of return.

Taxation

This module focuses on the various types of tax that affect property including but not exclusively, VAT and Corporation Tax.

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

Teaching

You are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. In addition, you have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor.

You use industry-standard software including CoStar, EGI, Argus Enterprise and Developer, BCIS and ISurv and have access to computer laboratory facilities throughout your course.

The Degree Apprenticeship Programme will run on a day-release basis.

Independent learning

When not attending lectures, tutorials or other timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. We advise you should take around 30 hours of independent study per week. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library, the learning zone, and computer laboratories.

Assessment 

Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

The balance of assessment by examination and assessment by coursework depends to some extent on the optional modules you choose.

Feedback

You will receive feedback on all practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

We aim to provide you with feedback within 10 working days of hand-in (practice assessment) and 20 working days of hand-in (formal coursework assessment).

Kate Rowan, BSc Hons, MSc MRICS is the Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Real Estate Surveying.  She has over 15 years’ industry experience as a general practice surveyor and registered valuer.  Kate is an RICS Assessor for the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), and APC doctor and APC counsellor. 

Progress meetings will be held once every three months, where the University employer link tutor and employer supervisor will meet with you to review progress made. The end point assessment is the final assessment for the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

With an extensive understanding of the property and real estate industry, you'll be well equipped to pursue a variety of roles, such as a Registered Property Valuer, Property Developer, Lease Consultant or a Property Asset Manager.  Built Environment at Salford currently boasts a 95% employment rate upon graduation.

Our graduates have gone on to work with national property organisations including CBRE; DTZ; Lambert Smith Hampton and Savills. Others have chosen to work for surveyors, local authorities and housing associations.

APPLICANT PROFILE

In addition to our academic entry requirements, we also look for certain characteristics in each student. Possessing these characteristics will not only help you to fulfil your potential at university, but it is also an essential requisite for a successful career in the built environment.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0, with no band below 5.5, is proof of this.

DELIVERY

The programme structure will be delivered on a part-time, day release basis over a three or five year period, subject to agreement by the employer and the University. For instance you can take advantage of enrolling on the University of Salford’s unique accelerated degree programme, completing your full degree within three years or you may decide with your employer to complete the degree on a part-time basis over five years.

Apprentices may start at one of two points in the year – September,and January with trimesters delivered on a rolling basis.

Salford Alternative Entry Scheme (SAES)

We positively welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to pursue the course successfully. Once we receive your application, we'll assess it and recommend it for SAES if you are an eligible candidate.

There are two different routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. Assessment will either be through a review of prior learning or through a formal test.

To be considered for the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme you must have already achieved or be working towards GCSE Maths and English Grade C/4 (or equivalent).

Accreditation of Prior Learning

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

HOW MUCH?

Apprenticeship Funding

The apprenticeship levy was introduced in April 2017 and requires all employers operating in the UK, with a pay bill of over £3 million each year to invest in apprenticeships.

The funding policy supports the changes to the way apprenticeships in England are paid for, underpinned by the apprenticeship levy of 0.5% of the annual pay bill for companies paying over £3 million per year.

There is also a co-investment model for companies who will not be paying into the levy. The government will cover 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship and the employer will only have to contribute the remaining 5%. Once payments have been declared to HMRC, employers will now have access to a digital apprenticeship account from which they will be able to access funding to pay for apprenticeship training.

The maximum amount of money allocated to each standard falls into one of 15 funding bands, ranging from £1,500 to £27,000. The Chartered Surveyor standard has been allocated the following funding band:
